How to Update a WordPress Plugin with SVN

If you haven’t downloaded the SVN repository locally yet, open a terminal and checkout the repo:

svn checkout "https://plugins.svn.wordpress.org/plugin-slug-here" "directory/plugin-slug-here"

Or, if you already have it downloaded locally, you can simply update it:

svn update "directory/plugin-slug-here"

Now, you can navigate to that folder and update the files with the modified versions you’ve updated. Once you’re done, view the “diff” in the terminal like so:

svn diff "directory/plugin-slug-here"

If everything checks out, you can commit the changes with an explanation of what you did:

svn commit --message "Fixed updating variable products"

And, you’re done!

Common Questions

What folders do I put the updated files in?

You should add the new “tags” folder for the version you’re updating to first. For example, if your plugin is at version 1.0.1 and you’re releasing version 1.0.2, create the /tags/1.0.2 folder and put your plugin file in it and commit. Then, put the files in the trunk folder and commit to that.
